I have come to the conclusion that J.J. Abrams is farting in my face. It is very likely that he is farting in yours as well, but I will only speak for myself. As with most episodes of Lost, tonight’s show got us no closer to any sort of resolution. I’ve actually resigned myself to the idea that there will be no resolution, and that’s actually ok with me.

Kate and Miles, farting in my face

What’s really annoying to me is the repetitiveness of it all. I don’t really care whether or not Ben Linus is good or evil (though I think I cared for most of season 2) and I certainly don’t care about Richard Alpert’s story (I guess he is strikingly handsome and his whole never growing old thing is kind of quirky, but really, does it matter?), and least of all, I don’t care to ever watch another sentimental beach reunion with the same sappy music, overdrawn smiles, and of course, slo mo — honestly, I beseech the most loyal Lost buffs to identify how many times they’ve done that on this show. I haven’t had that many reunions in my life, let alone in a 5 year period, or however long this fart fest has been going on.

I’m grateful that Paul Basile and his lovely wife Katie Baldwin introduced me to the wonderful world of plugging into Lost while on exercising on the treadmill, because if I had to sit myself down to watch this show for the hell of it, it just wouldn’t happen. But that’s just because I don’t have ABC at my house. My T.V. only registers NBC and Fox. Truth is, I can’t get enough of it and I look forward to more facial farts next week from the butt and mind of J.J. Abrams.

Two years ago I hosted a Tom Waits tribute at Bar Four, which to my recollection, was a wonderful night — the multiple glasses of whiskey that I consumed that evening did their very best to ensure that the memory of the experience remain fuzzy, but my brain cells appear to have been resilient. Or resilient enough, anyway.

About a year after that, my uber talented friend, Tom Curtin remembered that tribute and suggested that I submit my songs to something called The Puppet Playlist, a bi-monthly event that showcases the talents of both puppeteers and musicians paying homage to an artist or to a theme. Unfortunately, I submitted my music too late to be considered for their debut evening, which happened to be a Tom Waits tribute, but I have played the last four Puppet Playlists…

#2 – The Magnetic Fields

#3 – David Bowie (which I performed with Pearl and the Beard’s Emily Hope Price)

#4 – “The Seven Deadly Sins”

#5 – “Country Music”

The organizer of the Playlists, Josh Luxenberg and Jon Levin have put together five amazing evenings over the course of a year and all signs point to The Puppet Playlist continuing to kick ass… Word on the streets is that Playlist # 6 will be a tribute to They Might be Giants. Keep your eyes on that by visiting the new website… HERE!

Here’s a video of me throwing down at Playlist #4 this past December, for which I used “Dynamic Public Speaker” to say a little something about one of my favorite sins — VANITY!

Last night I dreamed that in the middle of a storm, with ominous gray skies and gigantic crashing waves, Wynn Walent took a little row boat with an outboard motor from the shore out to sea with no apparent purpose but to take on the challenge. I waited in a state of panic (for what seemed like hours in the dream) for him to return, though it became obvious that the ocean had swallowed him up…

But at the 11th hour he came back, casually approaching the shore in the row boat, this time in a surfer’s stance, with a look that said, “Hey! That was no problem whatsoever… what the hell is for dinner?!?!”

I love Wynn. And I could not have been happier with the fun times we had last weekend, short as it was. Beers at El Sombrero, whiskey at Bar Four served by Paul Basile, late night greasy food at Purity Diner, topped off by a hell of a show at Union Hall on Saturday, that included Beau Jennings (and his ridiculously big and luscious new band) and Mr. Basile’s continually awesome Great Elk. The four of us played well and the snow didn’t seem to stop anyone from showing their love.

Excellent times. Farewell, Wynn. Come back when you can.

I am just now coming off the post-show funk of 72 hours after having performed 16 SONGS at a live album recording at Chris Cubeta’s GaluminumFoil Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Seriously, that wiped me out… the build-up of it all was a lot for me to take, apparently. Everyone I spoke to said that things had never sounded so good, so that’s heartening but my upright bassist, Dan Jeselsohn, wisely suggested that I take a few days before listening to anything, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Thanks to Chris, Jeff and Gary for all your amazing work in making things sound so damn good, thanks to the players, Dan, Misty Foster and extra special guests, Paul Basile, Ivan Sandomire and Kevin Johnston (you take my breath away) for giving your best to the audience, and thanks to the fans, new and old, for making the experience a truly special one.

My apologies to Pearl and the Beard, The Blood Sugars and Dinosaur Feathers for my lack of presence at your CMJ show tonight at Pianos. Now that I’m out of my funk, I need to enjoy this moment with myself. Good night.

I am on the way to a funeral. It’s for a child. I’m starting to absorb that fact right now and it sits heavy. I’m on a Mega Bus, plugged in to Andrew Bird, senses sharpened, though I’m reeling from my Boston friend’s birthday party yesterday. I looked in the mirror after I dumped myself in a shower and thought that I looked worse than I felt. I couldn’t decide whether or not that was comforting. Just noticed “FUBAR” on the top of my right hand, the fading proof of last night’s events. Gotta figure out a way to rub this off before I show up at the funeral.

With that said, I turn to a rather frightening subject, not for the faint of heart, and certainly not entirely telling of the remainder of our great times on the road… shortly after being issued a speeding ticket on our way from Ithaca to Boston, the boys stopped at a roadside gas station. And here’s what my iPhone (Steve) found:

Yeah yeah, I know. I fell off the map. Clearly I haven’t been taking my everything pill regularly. Having made some notable life changes and collecting my thoughts I am ready to begin talking to myself again (and to anyone else who will listen), and perfect timing because fun things abound. After the most memorable Living Room performance of my life, Great Elk and I have begun our Northeast Summer Tour with gusto, having played three very different shows in a few days.

Thus far, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have treated us far more kindly than New Hampshire — packed shows, enthusiastic new friends and warm beds in which to sleep were the stories of Montclair and Philly, whereas our finest moment in Portsmouth probably came when our show was over and we enjoyed our first cool breeze since June. But we have hope for New England and our next few days in Vermont will surely be awesome. I have few doubts.

More than anything else, I have enjoyed the people with whom I have shared great times — namely the boys from Great Elk, whose songs are starting to feel like my own. Above we can see Paul and Patrick enjoying a mid-day PB & J on the Trinity College main quad before taking on New England. But everyone has been amazing. From my back-in-the-day MHS homeys, to our face-painted friends at Chernobyl to my new friend Ahmed, a Turk who has come to the states to study theology, almost all the people we’ve met have been great to us. And those who haven’t do not really linger in my mind.

We move on.

The lovely Kate Childs wrote an article called “Inside Family Records: The Music Man“, for which she interviewed me. It took me a few hours to forgive her for calling me a ‘thirty-something’ (technically correct since I’m 30, but emotionally disturbing). Since the Supermelon is a style and fashion oriented site I for once got to speak on something aside from music! Excerpt below, full article here.

While his daily routine might not be predictable, his go-to look for work is. In the five years since Wes moved to New York, his style has evolved into a tailored uniform that reads business not boring; urban but with a European sensibility. Button-down oxford shirts, skinny ties with a tie bar, and fitted jeans are standard form for Wes. He avoids the quirky yet ubiquitous pairing of Converse sneakers with business wear in favor of the traditional—he sticks to brown or black leather shoes for a polished look. “For the most part, I aspire to pursue a timeless look, with hints of the modern age in terms of cut,” explained Wes. “On a style level, I admire guys like Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Robert Downey Jr., and Daniel Craig.”
