Casey Shea - Rifle

Today’s edition of the Family Records Mystery Post features The Case of Casey Shea and the Antique Weaponry (if you’re wondering, yes, I was tempted to make a Case/Casey pun, but consider this my act of self-restraint for the day). WHO thought it was a good idea to give Casey a gun? WHAT could he possibly have up his sleeve? WHEN will the truth be revealed? WHERE did we get access to these fine rifles? WHY has a musician found himself in need of one? HOW is this going to end?

The answers to all these questions and more will be revealed soon. Stay tuned!

Pearl and the Beard are bloody excited to announce their very first UK tour THIS NOVEMBER! The tour kicks off in London, where the band will be opening for longtime friends Jukebox the Ghost. Then it’s two headlining shows in London (at a gorgeous old church where the acoustics blew Lauren’s socks off when she saw Bon Iver there) and Manchester; and a return to London, where PatB is excited to be opening for the very talented Amy LaVere.

11.03 Barfly w/Jukebox the Ghost (London, UK) [TIX]

11.04 St Pancras Old Church (London, UK) [TIX]

11.05 The Castle (Manchester, UK) [TIX]

11.07 The Lexington w/Amy LaVere (London, UK) [TIX]

Help us spread the word so the Pearl and the Beard can have many a successful trip across the pond! Re-blog, re-tweet, re-facebook, re-tumbl, email, mass text, skywrite, telegram, announce over your school’s intercom system, post to your office bulletin board – you get the idea. Let’s get excited!

The One Track Mind Series is here! My curated singles series will be full of delectable indie pop and this remix of Lacrymosa’s “Good At Heart” by the brilliant Andrew Maury of RAC Remix Collective starts us off with Volume 1. – Lauren

“I love dance songs and I’ve always wanted to write one. I only play the piano, and I prefer writing classical piano music, so none of what I’ve written so far has crossed over to a danceable category. I don’t end up finishing happy little ditties because I usually concentrate on the darker songs that tend to move me more than lighter songs do. I found out I’d be working with Andrew Maury at the same time that I found out he’d picked one of my darkest songs for a dance remix. I was pleased to discover that the remix presented the song to me in a new and true light. I suddenly sounded genuinely curious to understand a deeply disturbing moment in history from another point of view, which was what I really tried to explore when writing this song.”Caitlin Pasko (Lacrymosa)

The cover art was designed by Claudeland Louis and Kristine Thune. Volume 1 in the smaller circle means, yep, you guessed it, more to come! The ring design will be featured on every subsequent series release, with a different photo for each song. Got an idea for an unsigned artist/band for this series? Send ideas to lauren (at) thefamilyrecords.com.

For the longest time discovering new, great music was my favorite thing to do. Then I discovered that could be a part of my daily working life, and I started trying to get into A&R.

Then A&R died a mysterious sort of death.

I continued to pursue ways into the music industry, as music was still the only thing I got really excited about, and tried some djing and booking live shows. Elements of both of those things felt like A&R, finding great new talent and being able to share it with people but it still wasn’t quite enough. Starting my job with Family Records, I watched Wesley launch the Family Records Singles Club, focusing on beautiful acoustic/folk songs with really great original artwork attached. I secretly plotted to one day wear glasses and grow a beard and have my very own singles series.

Luckily, no glasses or beards were needed and it came up a few months after working there. My taste varies a huge amount but I have a special corner of my heart for danceable indie pop. It just makes people feel good and excited about their lives. I’ve always wanted to curate, discover, share and be proud of great music I find, and with the launch of “One Track Mind” I am able to finally do that.
I like to think that the songs in this series would be songs I would play if I was djing an indie night somewhere in NYC – except I won’t try to cross-fade anything.
I hope you love each song as much as the next and that you always come back to check out each new release.

The first release will be out next Tuesday on the Family Records Store. We’ll preview the audio and the artwork that morning.

Love,

Lauren @ Family Records

We’re proud to announce a brand new release by the newest edition to the Family Records.

“Lead Balloon”, a new full length record by Rosi Golan, is available for the first time exclusively in the Family Records Store. The physical record comes in deluxe packaging made to be lovely and lasting.

The widespread release (iTunes, et al) is set for September 27th, but you don’t have to wait for that! In honor of the release the record will be available for the next 24 hours at a discount for the first fans to respond to the release.

Rosi’s sophomore release is her first with the Family, but we’re also carrying her first record, “The Drifter & The Gypsy,” if you’re needing to get up to speed.

If you’ve never heard Rosi’s music, now is a great time to fix that. If you’re familiar with [read: in love with] her music already, you can wear your love on your chest. Her lovely heart t-shirt is a fitting tribute to your understandable devotion.

Check back soon for more info on how you can win Rosi Golan swag just by talking about her on the internet. Thanks to all of you for helping make this happen.

LOVE

-Colin at the Family
