The video below has me thinking, and I’d venture to say it might have you doing the same…

Now sure, I’m certainly living a more unconventional life than most, following a dream and not holed up in a cube….but still, I find myself searching for some sort of success…..to reach something or somewhere….always looking towards that next goal, that next big show. (like tonight’s with Jesse Lynn and Paula Valstein at The Highline Ballroom – Doors at 6, Concert at 7!) Then the show comes, and the show goes, and I start the cycle over again. Searching…

Funny thing is, the shows are usually the least enjoyable….they fly by and leave me empty, and they’re never as perfect as I want them to be. But as this video says, the big show is just an end point….it’s not the point of the composition. It’s not as fun as the rehearsals, not as satisfying as actually writing and finishing a song, and certainly not as beautiful as all the daily life in between that too often I’m taking for granted….all that in between….that’s the good stuff, that’s what the composition is about….now if I can just always remember that!

Now you may be asking yourself, what is a band with 3 guitars doing playing such an event? Well, to be honest, I’m not 100% sure. However, what I DO know, is that we get to take the stage at another of Manhattan’s best venues, The Highline Ballroom. Another thing I know is one of New York’s most gifted vocalists, the lovely Paula Valstein, will be playing right after us.

Paula was one of the first people I met when I moved to New York…we played all the same open mics together, so it’s pretty cool to get to share a bill at a proper ballroom almost six years later! Amazing!

So, like I said, two weeks and counting…..Friday, August 28th to be exact. Tickets in advance are only $10….$12 day of. So get your tickets early, I promise it will be well worth it!

8/28 – 7:00PM

For the first few years of the owning vs renting debate on music consumption, I’ve been strongly committed to the ownership model. Slowly, I’ve moved away from ownership in other realms of consumption. I do not own any DVDs, I rent/stream from Netflix. I almost always give books I buy away to friends once I’m done with them. I don’t own a car, but I’ve used Zipcars. Music rental has been tried a few times before, either badly done, or badly timed. It seems like that’s about to change. A service called Spotify is making waves in the European market as they prepare an entrance into the North American one. Bob Lefsetz has been praising the service for a few months now, and the Swedish Wire reports the following.

“According to record label executives, Spotify – launched last year – has already become more important than Apple’s music store iTunes. “iTunes is going really well, but Spotify is growing rapidly. There are signs that a large number of illegal downloaders are turning to Spotify”, said Mark Dennis, head of digital sales at Sony in Sweden, to the TT news wire. Also in terms of revenues Spotify has overtaken iTunes. “In five months from the launch Spotify became our largest digital source of income and so passed by iTunes”, said Per Sundin, head of Universal in Sweden. “It’s a fantastic development explained by the fact that Spotify really has exploded”.

In my opinion the real reason a service like this could take off right now is two-fold:

Increased Usage of SmartPhones - As more people buy devices that can stream content from the cloud, more will look at ownership as inconvenient, choosing streaming memberships as much more attractive. This would especially be the case if Apple approves the new Spotify app.

Spotify offers a value proposition interesting to illegal downloaders - Lets be honest, most of the time illegal downloading is a pain in the butt. You have to search for files, wait for a download that may or may not be password protected, re-tag mp3s, etc. However, it’s still preferred by most people to buying an album on iTunes for $10 or more. Here we see the convenience vs cost dilemma play out in favor of the frugale. However, if you can stream, at all times, all the albums in the world for $10 per month, then convenience will win out, and you’ll consume more music to the point that cost will also be a major factor.

I’ll be interested to follow Spotify in their entry into the US. If Apple was smart they would launch a competing service before Spotify enters the market, and they would block the Spotify app from iPhones. Check? Mate?

For the second straight month, The Margarita Club is taking a vacation from Pianos.

Will the margaritas be as strong or as addictive? Only time will tell, but what we do know is that they will be cheap!

Oh yes, the fine folks at Rockwood are showing us the respect we deserve by lowering the price to $3!!! Takes me back to the very first official club meeting….way back before Pianos lost it’s heart and raised the price to the astronomical $4 mark!??

In more going the extra mile news, not only have they said we can control the music playlist, they even put us on the schedule! Respect at last!

Please come and bring all your friends, but only if they have a good attitude, great spirit, and like to have fun!

………

The Margarita Club
Saturday, August 8th
Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St)
$3 margaritas from 3pm-7pm!

*lots of great music following the madness, like Abby Ahmad at 7!

Apparently, The Dutchmaster was interviewed by them recently, and both Wakey!Wakey! and I ended up being examples of how you too can make absolutely no money playing music.

No, but seriously, follow your dreams kids…unless your dream is becoming rich and famous being a musician…if that’s the case, be smart with your money, take two weeks off, and then quit…
