We are THRILLED to be going down to Austin TX for our fifth SxSW in a row, and even more exciting, our first year ever with an official Family Records presence. We have our own day party, in partnership with The Orchard, at the Dizzy Rooster, right on the main strip of 6th Street. Casey Shea, Pearl and the Beard, and Wakey!Wakey! are all coming down for a few other shows as well!

Casey Shea is currently on tour with our friends Tally Hall, Jukebox The Ghost and Skybox. He is subbing for Tally Hall’s guitarist/singer Red Tie Joe who couldn’t make this tour, and word has it one or two Casey Shea originals might be added to the set list for good measure as well. Tour dates below, as well as some gorgeous shots from the Bowery Ballroom show this week, taken by our very own Carolyn Wachnicki. More photos here. Casey Shea will also be playing a solo set at SXSW on Friday March 21st, as part of the Family Records/Orchard Showcase. More news on that soon!

Spirit Indie Film Awards Features Wakey!Wakey!

Last night’s Spirit Independent Film Awards featured Wakey!Wakey!’s “Square Peg Round Hole” during their broadcast alongside songs by Phoenix and our friends Princeton. It’s a wonderful festival that celebrates the independent film makers out there in a way no one else really does and we’re proud to be involved! Also Eddie Izzard was hosting, and who’s really cooler than Eddie Izzard? We also made it onto Emile Hersh’s Spirit playlist! Welcome To Tally Hall

Last night I made my triumphant return to The Bowery Ballroom. It had been about a year and a half since THIS happened!

This time around I had the pleasure of playing with the band Tally Hall. A group I met way back in 2006 when I opened for them at a show in New Jersey after digitally meeting them on myspace.

That was back when they were still unsigned and still lived in Michigan. Fast forward four years, and things have changed….they live in Brooklyn, they’re signed to Atlantic Records, and they have knocked out a 10 episode season of quite possibly the best Internet show EVER!

Due to some unforseen circumstances, one of their members (Joe Hawley – red tie) is unable to go on their March tour, so here I am filling in!

It’s been a bit crazy learning a whole set of pretty complicated material in a very short time….my brain feels like their album cover. I’ve survived so far….I’m filling some pretty big shoes, but their fans have been very supportive, so I’m quite thankful for that!

Last night was awesome….packed show and an amazing audience! The other two bands on the tour, Skybox and Jukebox The Ghost, destroyed! Then we took the stage and kept the complete and total domination going, starting with an electric set and then moving off the stage and down onto the floor for the acoustic set where all 550 people in attendance sat while we played unplugged.

Today we begin three weeks of madness! Looking forward to it, though it’s quite sad to leave Langhorne on the day of our 5 year anniversary!!!???!! (Yes, I agree she’s awesome, and no, I don’t know how she puts up with me either.)

I’m currently in the back of the van…we just had Wendy’s…those junior bacon cheeseburgers may be the end of me.

Modern Radio, A Destructive Force

Don Van Cleave of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores speaks some truth on radio and how it’s modern incarnation has been very destructive to the music business. He also gives props to KEXP for being everything most stations are not, and they’re thriving because of it. I’d also like to add KCRW, WOXY, WFUV and a few other stations to that list.

AIDS Benefit Saturday Night

I woke up this morning not feeling too great about the fact that my car was buried in 3 feet of snow…it wouldn’t be so bad, but I had places to go. Luckily I had a good conversation with my breakfast….she told me I should not worry about such things, and then I ate her. MmMMMmmm!

I wasted about 15 minutes trying to dig my car out using an old Florida license plate as my shovel until finally a kind man with a real shovel helped dig me out. 20 minutes later, I was on my way!

I’m gonna spare you the details of the other two times my car got stuck in the snow today, but I’ve learned that a shovel is a good thing to have. Of course something other than a Honda Civic would probably be good too.

IN OTHER NEWS: Tomorrow night I’m playing a show with the band at The Living Room….this will be my last show in New York until April. It’s a benefit for AIDS, and lots of great people are on the bill…please do the smart thing, and come out.

Pearl and the Beard Tour Dates

We’re excited to announce Pearl and the Beard are touring their way down to SxSW. Before they really shoot out there the band is performing in Biddeford (ME) tonight and the local paper had some really nice things to say:

‘Donny and Johnny” tells the tale of Johnny Cash’s house burning down, and it’s a spellbinding union of vocals, guitars, hand clapping, cello and other sounds from the band’s collective imagination. ”Twice Today,” with its soothing cello, gentle glockenspiel and stark outpouring of affection, is a must-hear acoustic ode to love. ”Lost in Singapore,” starring Hope Price’s accordion and bilingual lyrics, is another gem from the band with the odd name and wondrous sound. I didn’t know when I started writing this week’s column that I’d end up with a new favorite band. Funny how that happens. - Portland Press Herald
